Meet John Berlin

John Berlin thinks if he writes about himself in the third person it will look more official and read like a real publisher wrote it.

Okay, so I’m only writing this for one reason and that is just in case there is a special somebody out there wondering if they should take a chance on this unknown author and are checking first to see if he’s real and not some Ai robot.

Yes, I’m real.  That really is me.  And yes, I really do look that smug without meaning to.

The Department U books are very special to me.

This is the most difficult project I’ve ever undertaken.  I have tried to give up so many times and every time I throw in the towel it gets thrown back at me.

Let me explain…

I was inspired by an old writer called John Creasey.  He had a series called Department Z about British counterespionage set around World War II.

My discoveries and experiences in the world of UAPs needed an outlet and so Department U was born.

In an effort to do the department justice I have built up a library of writing books learning from oldies like Dwight V Swain, Jack Bickham, and modern heroes like Dean Wesley Smith, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, James Scott Bell and Scott Mariani.

Since working behind the scenes for the last several years I became aware of another series written by Jussi Adler-Olsen featuring a cold case crime unit called Department Q.

U and Q sound a little too close, which is why I decided to rename my series The UFO Desk, but as Department U has been with me for so many years I had to keep it as part of the original story. So if anyone asks, it was Department Z, not Q, that started this!

The world of UFOs is fascinating, frustrating and very dark. A big part of me doesn’t want to be writing about them at all.  The characters, secret units, the unofficial agencies, the lies, the stonewalling, and the threats… sometimes it’s safer watching from a distance.

But there’s another part of me that can’t stop.  And that’s the part writing this now.  Delphine is just too damn important to me not to.

Let’s address the modern day elephant in the room.  I promised myself I would write 3 books before sharing any.  So while I was toiling away for the last several years, a new technology has emerged.

Let me state this clearly.  I do not use Ai to write or compile my books.  I’m sure Ai has it’s place, but it’s not creating my world.  So fear not, my books are not Ai generated slop.  The slop is 100% me.  Of course that means if you don’t like my work then I have to take full responsibility.

I take the craft of writing very seriously and will continue to learn this craft to get better.  These “stories” are too important to me.  And where would be the fun?

When I was younger I would ride my bike down to Torquay on the south coast.  It was a seventy mile round trip that took everything out of me.  It was dark before my shaky legs got me home.  But the more I rode, the fitter I got.  My leg muscles exploded and soon I had so much energy when I arrived at Torquay, I kept going, visiting Paignton, Brixham and Dartmouth.  The trip grow to over a hundred miles.  And still I got fitter.

There was a bus service that could have got me to Torquay without any effort on my part.  I could just sit there looking out of the window instead of sweating and exerting my energy climbing those hills.

But where’s the adventure in that?

I loved that bike.  I loved listening to my Walkman while I rode and stopping to change my cassettes.  I loved climbing those hills.  I loved racing back down them.  I loved what it demanded from me, both physically and mentally.

I don’t ride anymore (but I’ve still got my leg muscles!).  I write.  My keyboard is my bike.  Department U is my Torquay.  And Ai is the bus.

Stuff the bus.  There’s no adventure if I’m not struggling to share these stories.

Now you know I’m real.  But that doesn’t mean I’m any good.

So take a chance, and let’s go back in time together to 1989.  It was a weird and wonderful year.

It was the year Delphine Larose arrived in Bristol and discovered the world’s most dangerous secret…
